I worked with Rising for Justice as a Graphic Design/Marketing Intern during the 2019-2020 school year at the University of California, DC. My role included drafting, conceptualizing, and finalizing content for our Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter pages, as well as producing copy and scheduling content for the week. Other duties included standardizing the letterhead for the company, developing evergreen content, and assisting the Immigrant Defense Program in creating a 30 second radio announcement of our pro-bono services.
I began developing content for a press release announcing their new Executive Director, Grace Lopes. I was responsible for brainstorming, developing content, making adjustments based on feedback, and making final adjustments for all of our social media content.
Our social media content ranged from staff and event announcements, interaction posts that encourage comments or anecdotes, and posts that overlap with current events or trends, such as Giving Tuesday and World Mental Health Day.
My first major social media campaign was to develop content for DC Pro Bono Week, a week long opportunity for pro bono lawyers and law students to find new organizations to work with and to make new connections.
This project was different in that I was specifically reaching out to pro bono lawyers, instead of our usual social media audience of multi-disciplinary lawyers, alumni, activists, and community organizers.
At the beginning of November, we were chosen as Ad2DC's 2019-2020 public service client. This was a significant event for us because Ad2DC provides marketing and advertising analysis for their public service client for an entire year, free of charge. They provide the framework for our Marketing team to continue building an audience on our social media platforms.
Announcements like this one can come up quickly and the accompanying graphics are needed on a same-day basis, so I was able to provide when needed.
At the halfway mark of my 10 week program, I was gearing up to prepare for our end of year appeal campaign. This social media campaign would take place in late November and feature pro bono success stories on our social media.
Our end of year appeal campaign happened to overlap with #GivingTuesday, which occurred on December 3rd and is a global movement of generosity and activism for companies, non-profits, and individuals alike. We were able to incorporate this social media activism into our graphics, which improved our social media engagement.
As my internship came to end, one of the my last projects included recruitment of the next group of interns for not only my program, but for other programs that I had collaborated with.
In addition to developing graphics for our social media platforms, I also refreshed the old internship announcement to feature more accurate information and day-to-day responsibilities.
I increased our combined social media follower count by 135 at the end of the 10 week program.
By the end of my 10 week program, I took away a valuable experience at the intersection of graphic design and law. It was my first time working in a law office setting, and I found the work engaging because it expanded my perspective of how design functions in the non-profit industry.
